Sheila Franklin Coleman was recently honored for her 35 years of service to Boothville-Venice High/Elementary School as secretary / bookeeper during the Black History program. Jowald Green, along with Mrs. Maria M. Prout's blessings, spearheaded the entire presentation and did an awesome job. Jowald enlisted the help of Leslie Smith, Linda Sylve, Gail Pinkins, June Franklin, Jeanette and Bobby Prout.

It turns out that passing along a love of gardening to the younger generation sets them up for a healthier adulthood, and they may even learn to love eating vegetables and to be less picky eaters. Over the years I’ve enjoyed working on a few school and community garden projects geared towards teaching kids not only how to grow plants, but how to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Something magical happens when a kid tries a ripe cherry tomato fresh off the vine, or a baby carrot pulled straight from the ground. The flavor hits, and their eyes get big. A smile usually follows. There’s a sense of pride and one of wonder when children plant a seed, watch it grow, and then taste the result. Students who interact with gardens on a regular basis were found to eat a half a serving more of vegetables per day in a University of Texas study. Over a lifetime, that extra produce and healthy eating can really add up.

Concerned residents of district 7 filed a recall petition against district 7 council member Carlton LaFrance with the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office on April 26. Organizers now have 180 days—around 6 months—to collect enough signatures on their petition in order to have a possible election held to replace LaFrance.

As announced in an official statement from Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District (PPHTD) executive director Charles Tillotson releases on April 21, the port has officially cut Louisiana 23 Development Company (LA-23) and its owner Chris Fetters from being involved in its proposed railway extension/ container terminal projects.

The Belle Chasse joint Naval and Air Force base recently got confirmation that they will be receiving additional investment from the federal government. On April 20, the US Air Force selected the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NAS-JRB) New Orleans in Belle Chasse to receive some new fighter jets.
