Plaquemines Council Rejects Stolthaven ITEP Applications

The Plaquemines Parish Government (PPG) council denied two Industrial Tax Exemption Program (ITEP) requests from Stolthaven — a global company that operates a bulk storage terminal in Braithwaite—at their May 25 meeting. This may be viewed as a rather unexpected move for this council as it has repeatedly emphasized the need to be business-friendly, helping to facilitate development in whatever way the local government can.

Ironton Church Gets Rebuilding Funds from FEMA, State Government

The federal and state government, working in tandem with one another, have secured funding for the initial phases of the Ironton Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church’s demolition and rebuilding. According to the church pastor Reverend Dr. Haywood Johnson Jr., multiple federal and state agencies worked together to help begin the work of rebuilding the church after it was destroyed in Hurricane Ida back in August 2021.

PPSO Reviews Legal Options After Federal Lawsuit Finds Deputy Guilty of Civil Rights Violations

On Wednesday, May 17, a federal civil jury found that Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) and several deputies (primarily deputy Corbett Reddoch) violated the civil rights of Belle Chasse attorney Michael Ray Holmes in his 2018 arrest. As a result of this lawsuit, Holmes is set to be awarded around $122,700 for costs related to damages, pain and suffering, medical bills, and criminal defense. If no appeal is filed in this case, the money will be paid for by PPSO sheriff Jerry Turlich’s office.

2023 Library Summer Reading Program Starts in June

Plaquemines Parish Library has been putting on a Summer Reading program for over 40 years to combat summer learning loss (also known as the “summer slide”), the library staff always endeavor to develop a love of reading in children, and help struggling readers catch up before the next school year.
