Gardening in our urban and suburban areas comes with plenty of unique challenges, but one that I see misdiagnosed as a fungus or even bug damage is actually linked to air pollution. We’ve heard of the ozone layer in school, which is the bene ial upper layers of the atmosphere that protects us from harmful ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Ozone is a molecule of three oxygen atoms linked together, which usually breaks down into a two-atom oxygen molecule that we breathe, called dioxygen, when it sinks to the lower levels of the atmosphere. On what are called “ozone action days”, the three-atomed ozone molecules build up in the lower atmosphere, when conditions are favorable. _is is almost always calm, hot days with no breeze, which allows the ozone and other pollutants to accumulate at the earth’s surface. Some people have health and respiratory problems that make them sensitive to ozone, so on the action days they are advised to stay indoors in air conditioning. Some plants are also sensitive to ozone and other air pollution, and this is especially true of legumes.
