Calling all beginning and more “seasoned” gardeners! Residents of St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes with a passion for plants are invited to apply to the summer Louisiana Master Gardener course. Each year, throughout the state the LSU AgCenter holds Master Gardener trainings to further encourage leadership and the spread of research-based horticultural information within our communities. If you’ve been interested in starting a community or school garden, a farmer’s market, or volunteering with area organizations connected to plants, this course will give you the tools and know-how to get growing. Beginners and experienced gardeners are welcome.

BVES Recognizes March Students of the Month

The following students were named Boothville Venice Elementary School’s (BVES) March Students of the Month for meeting the school wide behavior expectations — be respectful, be responsible, and be safe all month long. A presentation was made in their honor on March 30. Students received a certificate, a yard sign and goodie bag provided by the PTO. The March Students of the Months are: Headstart - Gracie Busby; PreK - Ivy Armstrong; Kindergarten - Reed Ragas and Visakha Meas; First Grade - Kenzie Glass and Autumn Merrick; Second Grade - Vinh Tang and Angelina Tran; Third Grade - Angelina Perez, Maurice Lobrano and Audrey Minjarez; Fourth Grade - Kency Nunez and Alexander DeLos Santos-Antunez; Fifth Grade - Kenny Ngo and Nathaly Diaz; and Sixth Grade - Ahnyrie Smith and Emmett Dillard. BVES Principal Mrs. Maria M. Prout congratulates all of the students for a job well done!

National Pet ID Week: April 17-24

Starting on April 17, we will be observing National Pet ID Week! The Louisiana SPCA emphasizes how important it is for pet owners to make sure their pet’s identification is up to date. Pet identification can be the ID tags attached to their collars as well as microchips given to them at the vet. These identifications will provide the best chance possible for reunification with their owners in the case they are lost.

Early Voting for April 29 Election

Early voting for the April 29 election began on Saturday, April 15 and will run through Saturday, April 22, and, though it is a small election for Plaquemines Parish, residents will still have the opportunity to vote on a 2.89 mill (around $2.5 million) millage renewal being sought by the local Hospital Service District (HSD). As usual, the early voting locations will be at the Registrar of Voters Office in Port Sulphur, the Courthouse Annex Building in Belle Chasse, and the Percy Griffin Community Center in Davant (though this location will only be open on Saturdays).

Council Votes to Join Lawsuit Against New FEMA Regulations

The Plaquemines Parish Government (PPG) council has decided that they can no longer passively accept the new flood insurance regulations and flood risk ratings handed down to them by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). At their April 13 meeting, council members unanimously approved a resolution that authorizes PPG to join the Louisiana Attorney General in “litigation against FEMA to challenge Risk Rating 2.0.”

Council Re-Hires Dannie Garrett

Over the course of their April 13 special meeting and regularly scheduled council meeting, the Plaquemines Parish Government (PPG) interviewed and selected one person to fill the position of council attorney. There were two applicants interviewed for the position, Avery Riley Jr. and Dannie Garret III (who has served as the council attorney for several years).

Councilman Chris Schulz Schedules Public Town Hall in Belle Chasse

Several Plaquemines Parish public officials will be gathering at the Belle Chasse Auditorium on Wednesday, April 19 at 6 p.m. for a town hall meeting that all residents are invited to. Organized by district 3 council member Chris Schulz, the purpose of the town hall is to provide a general update to residents on several important topics impacting the parish.
