With the cancelation of the December 22 scheduled Parish Council meeting, the 2011 legislative session effectively came to an end. However, there are many pieces of legislation still lying in wait for the Council’s return in January 2012. One of those resolutions would relocate coming council meetings from the temporary Courthouse on F. Edward Hebert to the Percy M. Griffin Center in Davant.

Councilman P.V. Griffin, who represents the Eastbank and is the son of the civil rights activist the community center is named for, introduced the legislation.

“You will have to get used to coming over there, might as well get started,” Griffin said to fellow Councilmembers.

The proposed move would precede the official move set to take place later once a Pointe-a-la-Hache courthouse has been constructed, now that the Parish Seat is set to remain in Pointe-a-la-Hache. The current charter dictates that the Council hold its meetings at the Parish Seat, or at set separate locations.

“The government of the Parish of Plaquemines and the other political subdivisions and districts therein may be located at the Parish Seat, or at such other public buildings as may be designated by the Parish Council,” the charter states.

The Percy M. Griffin center was officially opened December 19, 2010, after Katrina had destroyed the original community center.

The Council is scheduled to hold a vote on relocating their current bi-weekly meetings back on the Eastbank at the next regularly scheduled meeting, set to take place on January 12, 2012.
