Striker strikes landJun 24th, 2013 | By Candace Griffin | Category: news
Last Sunday, a bulk carrier named the Virtuous Striker hit land in Sunrise. The vessel was heading southbound, sailing under a Bahamian flag, when it encountered a steering failure. Consequently, the Captain lost control of the ship and ran aground on the Westbank of the river, just missing a sediment pipeline.
The ship pushed a large surge of water over the levee, but as of now no damage has been found, and the vessel has since drifted back into the river and is currently sitting in 32 feet of water, stuck in the mud. Officials say that it will most likely have to be towed into deeper waters before any damage can be assessed.
