The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District recently awarded a $29.5 million contract to Phylway Construction, of Thibodaux, to construct a new pump station with fronting protection features at the existing Wilkinson
Canal Pump Station located near Myrtle Grove. This is the fifth New Orleans to Venice (NOV) / Non-Federal Levee (NFL) contract to be awarded that will reduce risk in Plaquemines Parish south of the Greater New Orleans Hurricane
and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System.
The 33-month contract includes building a new pump station with a pumping capacity of an approximate 1,000 cubic feet per second (CFS) in place of the existing Wilkinson Canal Pump Station and constructing fronting protection features to reduce the effects of storm surge on the pump station during a tropical event.
Fronting Protection construction will include construction of a concrete T-wall in front of the new pump station and an extension of the pump discharge pipes constructed through the floodwall. Valves or gates will also be incorporated into the discharge pipes to prevent backflow. In addition, tie-ins into the existing levees on both sides of the pump station are scheduled. These features will bring Wilkinson Canal Pump Station into compliance with new standards and should be completed in spring 2016.
“We are glad to finally get these levee and pump station projects started and we are very proud of the efforts made between the Parish, State, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to start turning dirt on these projects quickly,” said
Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser. “When we first started this process we were told it would be a much longer process than it has turned out to be but by having a great relationship with the State and Corps we have been able to expedite these projects. This is a great step forward for Plaquemines Parish.”
The NOV / NFL projects are two separate projects being constructed on a complementary timeline that will reduce risk in Plaquemines Parish and defend against a storm surge event that has a two percent chance of occurring in any given year.
