Plaquemines and NAS gather at Medal of Honor ParkJun 10th, 2013 | By Terri Sercovich | Category: community
As Memorial Day neared, numerous military members, Plaquemines residents, veterans and local leaders gathered to show their appreciation for those who sacrificed their lives in all our nation’s wars.
On May 24, a group that trains Navy first class petty officers to become future chief petty officers, sponsored a Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony at the Louisiana Medal of Honor Park in Belle Chasse.
“I couldn’t be happier to be here,” said Jeannine Naquin, wife of Murray Naquin, the founder of the park. “My late husband was really passionate about building this monument. He served in the United States Navy for four years and wanted to do something special to give back.”
The ceremony attracted a number of people including Capt. Jack Hill, commanding officer of the Naval Air Station in Belle Chasse; Ron Atchley, treasurer for the Louisiana Medal of Honor Park; Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser; and Parish Councilman Keith Hinkley.
The celebration started with refreshments and a concert by the Navy Band New Orleans Brass Quintet. The ceremony began with the raising of the American, state, parish and Prisoner of War/Missing in Action flags, followed by the raising of service flags during the playing of their respective service songs.
“I am glad to see a ceremony like this being held at this location,” said Naquin. “It’s a 32- acre park and has a lot of potential. The biggest problem that we have found is the lack of funding to finally complete the respected monument. The money that we have is all grassroots donations, a few grants and the selling of bricks.”
The monument remains unfinished with hopes that someday it will be complete and can attract more visitors.
Members of CPO 365 have been cleaning up the park during the past few months. Their work has included pulling weeds, cleaning the monument, organizing storage areas and much more. Much of the construction of the park was provided by U.S. Navy Seabees.
