We are getting to the point where it’s safe to say cooler weather is on the way. The mornings aren’t quite so hot, and the evening temps are falling well below 80. It’s time to get out into the yard and start preparing tired, crispy garden beds for our best gardening season, which starts soon! The recent rains have perked a lot of plants up and I’m seeing some healthy signs of growth on woody ornamentals, perennials, and trees which is encouraging. Remember that these plants are still in an extremely stressed state, which is why so many live oaks are falling in the city. The gauntlet of dry weather and relentless heat took a toll and plants need a few years to recover from that amount of stress. Extremes like that retard growth and make plants less able to fight off diseases and pests using natural defenses. Because of this, hold off on any pruning until November at the earliest. The exception being repeat- blooming roses, those can be safely trimmed back now to encourage a flush of blooms for fall. Remove the top 1/3 of the canes, take out any dead sections, and lightly fertilize.
