THE PELICAN TALES

Body
With the help of our art teacher, Ms. Emily Chaisson, our little pelican artists paid tribute to Mr. Rousselle in their art enrichment classes. Kindergarten and first grade students have been working on portraits of our superintendent using oil pastels and tempra paint. Some of their talented masterpieces are featured here. The students and staff of BCPS want the thank Mr. Rousselle for his dedication and support throughout his years of service, but especially for our beautiful school building.

But remember that only 50 percent of Louisiana citizens are actually registered. What that means is that there was a turnout of only 18 percent of voters who are actually qualied to vote. A Family Aair of Fishing

Body
What began as a simple comment became a moment in time for a small family reunion. Several months ago, I was speaking to one of my cousins on my mother’s side of the family, the Favret family, an idea for a visit came up. Originally, my grandfather was from Pointe a La Hache and eventually around the early 1900’s became a very successful builder in New Orleans. His name was Lionel F Favret and moved upriver to raise his family at St Claude and Deslonde. The family included six children, four boys and my mother Clare and my aunt Marie. Lionel built many schools and churches including ones in Plaquemines Parish, hotels, and even a large part of Holy Cross school. When my mother was a child there were only four other houses on her side of the industrial bridge. Dairy cows were being raised behind their house. My mother’s older sister Marie married before WWII a young gentleman Edward Sporl Jr.. My mother Clare married my father Edward Delery of Friscoville St in Arabi and Pointe a la Hache as my father was a young soldier in WWII. When I was a kid, I would always see the sign for Sporl plant nursery on St Bernard Hwy as we ventured to our houseboat at Cox Bay. I guess they were not remotely close relatives of my older Sporl relatives, but the name was still familiar. The age difference between my mother and her sister plus the timing of WWII my Sporl cousins Edward and Robert were 12 to 15 years older than me. They were my favorite Favret cousins. Because of my uncle Ed’s career my cousins grew up in many ports cities as my uncle set up the importation of bananas from central America with United Fruit. Yes, Edward and Rob were my look to cousins, and both finished at Jesuit High School and graduated from Notre Dame University. Today both of them are in their eighties living in California, their teenage years temporary home base.

Time to Plant Strawberries

Body
October is the prime time to get a few specialty crops in the ground so that they produce and thrive on the right timeline. Some of this may seem counterintuitive, but there are great reasons for planting your strawberries in late October and early November in southeastern Louisiana. Typically, in other parts of the country, planting strawberries is something gardeners do in springtime. A lot of the garden centers in the New Orleans area also seem to believe this, selling strawberry plugs and starting plants in 4-inch pots in March, April, and June. _is is much too late for them to make a decent crop, and usually they do not survive the summer heat and increased disease pressure. Commercial strawberry producers in the south treat strawberries as an annual crop-replanting each fall, picking in late winter/ early spring, and then planting something else in mid spring. Strawberries treated as perennials here usually zzle out or limp along, suffering from crown rot, fungal leaf blight, bacterial leaf spots, or simply shriveling up in the heat. I have yet to see a healthy, productive patch of strawberries grown as perennials in southern Louisiana.
