Plaquemines parents are hopeful gene therapy will save their sons

By Jack Tiebout

Jody and Julia Taravella know that they can save their teenage sons’ lives. They also know that they will not be able to do it without help from their neighbors in Plaquemines Parish. The Taravellas’ sons, Daniel, 19, and Alexander, 14, have a rare and terminal genetic disease called Aspartylglucosaminuria (AGU). It only has about 300 documented cases around the world, though it is often misdiagnosed as Autism.
