The old sign for Judge Perez Memorial Park still stands at the park’s gate. The park will be renamed and reopened this year. Councilman Anthony Buras hopes it will encourage the youth of Jesuit Bend to get out and play

Former Judge Perez Park set to re-open

The defunct Judge L.H. Perez Park will be re-opening this year with a new name and a new look. Many are optimistic it will now stand as a sign of Plaquemines reconciling with and overcoming Judge Perez’s dark legacy. But more importantly, some would argue, it will offer the youth of Jesuit Bend, many of whom do not know of The Judge’s existence, an excellent opportunity to stretch their legs and have some fun. “The paperwork is almost finished,” said District 5 Councilman Anthony Buras, who pushed legislation in the parish council to acquire and oversee the property. “Hopefully on the first of April, we’ll start getting some parish trucks in here to clean it up.”
