BC mother charged with poisoning death of her 17-month-old son

Erika Nicole Wigstrom of Belle Chasse was arrested for the January 24 for the 1st degree murder of her 17-month-old son Lucas Ruiz. A March 7 Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office autopsy report indicated Lucas’ blood alcohol content level was approximately .280 g/%. The cause of death was determined to be acute ethanol intoxication and was ruled a homicide. Lucas, a down syndrome child with a heart defect, was initially poisoned in 2012 when rum was injected into his feeding tube during a hospital stay. Lucas’ father, Cesar Ruiz, had been charged with 2nd degree cruelty to a juvenile for that incident.
