Jade Duplessis was crowned 2013 Orange Queen during Saturday night’s selection. There were seven contestants vying for queenship, but showed the passion and dedication it takes to take home the crown.
First runner up and second runner up were Eden Bubrig and Lauren Guidry, respectively.
Twenty-year-old Duplessis, who is currently pursuing a nursing degree at Holy Cross College, is elated to be this year’s Orange Queen. She is a resident of Belle Chasse, and daughter of Rickie and Sonya Duplessis.
She also holds fond memories of her time as an Orange Blossom when she was younger.
“Being Queen has always been a lifelong dream of mine,” said Duplessis. “I was an Orange Blossom in second grade, and ever since then I’ve envisioned myself as one day becoming Queen.”
She also hopes to become an ambassador for the Parish of Plaquemines through her reign as Queen.
“I want to get out and travel every weekend, so I can do my part to promote Plaquemines Parish,” said Duplessis. “We’re an important and diverse parish and I want to be able to represent our citrus industry as well our people in a positive light. I’m beyond excited to have the opportunity of being the 67th Orange Queen. This all feels like a dream to me right now, but I’m excited and prepared to serve as this year’s Queen. I hope I can make Plaquemines Parish proud.”
Also crowned at this year’s selection was 2013 Orange Teen Queen Cheyenne Hartgrove. She is a first time contestant and resident of Belle Chasse. Her parents are Donald and Stacy Willyard. First runner up was Kaitlyn Popich. Duplessis will be succeeding Stephanie Becnel, who was happy to hand over her title to Duplessis but could not help but get emotional when reminiscing about her reign as 2012 Queen.
“It’s been an honor to serve as your Queen and I’ve been blessed to be able to have reigned with family,” said Becnel who reigned with her great uncle, 2012 Orange King Ben Becnel. “This has been an amazing experience, and I hope I have served Plaquemines Parish well.”
Becnel even offered some words of advice to Duplessis and encouraged her to take advance of this amazing privilege.
“I’ve heard plenty of advice from past queens, but the most important thing I can tell you is to seize every opportunity that comes your way,” expressed Becnel. “Because before you know it you’ll be standing where I am now, looking back on the things you’ve accomplished. All any Queen wants is to see her successor succeed, so I wish the best for you. And if you decide to glance back, I’ll always be there ready to help you in any way that I can.”
