Greco admits affairSep 23rd, 2013 | By Terri Sercovich | Category: news
Rumors swirling in the community about problems at the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office have ranged from allegations of theft to reassignment of detectives, and Sheriff Lonnie Greco said on Friday that he was ending the rumors by admitting to a personal indiscretion he claims has no connection to the Sheriff’s Office.
Greco admitted that he had an affair with a former Sheriff’s Office employee. The employee, who Greco did not identify, resigned around July. “I made a mistake as a man as far as violating the trust of my wife,” Greco said.
“I’m sorry it happened. My wife supports me 100 percent,” he said. “We are staying together as a family, and pushing on.”
The Sheriff, who took office in July of 2012, said he has been open with people over the last few weeks when asked about the affair.
He even volunteered the information to both judges, the Clerk-of-Court, and a surprised American Legion membership last week, he said.
“It’s humiliating,” he continued. “But it happened and it’s a private matter. ”
But Greco said his personal folly has not and will not compromise the Sheriff’s Office.
“What has taken place has not affected my job,” he said. “It’s embarrassing, but as far as me operating the Sheriff’s Department, I’m performing my duties. We are doing good as a department.”
Greco pointed out that PPSO is operating with a $500,000 surplus, crime is down, and victims of past crimes are coming forth because they have a renewed faith in the Sheriff’s Office.
“Right now, I’m concentrating on my millage renewal… and on getting the prison operational,” he continued.
“It’s a mistake I regret and will regret for the rest of my life.”
