Volunteers and organizations celebrated Lillie Mae’s return to the community with a house dedication in March.

Returning home to Braithwaite

Almost two years since Hurricane Isaac, Braithwaite residents continue to struggle with returning to their community. The unknown of the federalized levees, the cost of insurance and the fear of another storm plagues the rebuilding efforts. But no matter the challenges, Lillie Mae Cosse’, a native of the east bank of Plaquemines Parish, was determined to return to her roots. Hurricane Isaac destroyed Lillie Mae’s house, which she had repaired after Hurricane Katrina. She knew there was no way to salvage her home and her insurance fund was used by her mortgage company to pay off her SBA loan.
