Ansardi honored for three years of UW serviceJun 24th, 2013 | By Candace Griffin | Category: top story
Businesswoman Danica Ansardi recently finished up her third term as the Plaquemines Parish Chair for the United Way Campaign— a term that is usually only held for one year, and handed over the reigns to longtime Plaquemines Parish School Board employee Monica Wertz.
Ansardi said she had always given donations to United Way in the past, but “did not realize what an impact it had on the community until after I became part of the program.”
“My goal as Campaign Chair was to remind people of what United Way was capable of doing,” said Ansardi. “And encourage them to donate to the cause.”
Over the last three years under Ansardi’s leadership, an annual average of over $300,000 was raised for the Parish’s United Way Fund. This money went towards funding programs with the YMCA, Community CARE Center, Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program, Plaquemines Nonprofit Rebuilding Pilot Program, and many others.
Another one of Ansardi’s goals was to spread the word about the United Way Crisis Line. By dialing 211, callers in need of shelter, food, medical services, and many other emergency services will be connected to a local agency that can help.
“We get around 70 calls a month,” exclaimed Ansardi. “It’s hard to believe that so many people in the area need help.”
Ansardi’s says that one of her biggest accomplishments, however, was acquiring more funding for the Community CARE Center. The center started off as a bare bones facility, but now has close to 50 counselors, and can provide free medical care to those who need it.
As for the future, Ansardi will soon serve as the Chair of the Parish’s Leadership Council, which assesses the needs of the community and finds ways to fund the necessary projects.
Ansardi says that she will continued to personally donate to the United Way Fund.
“I couldn’t face myself or my community if I didn’t donate,” said Ansardi. “I want to be a part of the solution.”
Ansardi’s replacement will be incoming Chair Monica Wertz, Human Resources Directer at the Plaquemines Parish School Board.
“I hope that I can encourage people to stop for a moment and think about others,”said Wertz. “That is the spirit of United Way.”
Her goal is to get as many people involved with the Campaign as she can.
“It doesn’t even have to be monetary involvement,”said Wertz. “I‚ll be encouraging people to donate their time or services if they can.”
Wertz beleives that by getting people active in their own community, and building partnerships with participating companies, employees, and individuals, the United Way Fund will grow exponentially.
