Coach Luke Sheekey and the Plantation Athletic Club (PAC) “Real Madrid” (pronounced ‘Royal Madrid’) 11 and under D1 soccer team beat the Lafayette Fusion in this year’s Louisiana Soccer Association’s Sugar Bowl State Championship, held in Baton Rouge.

Named after the famed European football team, the players of Real Madrid took the championship game 2-1, with a goal scored by Will Leopold of Belle Chasse. Coach Sheekey said that the team’s overall ability always had championship potential, but the level of play in the final game was beyond impressive.

“It was brilliant,” Sheekey said. “I’ve been telling them all season they were the best team in the state. It was all about getting the best out of them…we had to prove it.”

The Real Madrid team had defeated the Lafayette Fusion in their first meeting in the regular season, but the opposing Fusion had not been beaten for some time.

“Luckily, every thing came together,” Sheekey said. “They all worked really hard and their reward was a state championship.”

The PAC Real Madrid Boys Soccer Team won the Louisiana Soccer Association’s Allstate Sugar Bowl State Championship held in Baton Rouge. In the preliminaries, played April 16 - 17 at Pelican Park in Mandeville, the team won all three of its games to advance to the finals. The team won its quarterfinal and semifinal games to advance to the championship game, which they won 2-1.
